Whole of school Diamond Jubilee Celebration

21 March 2015

Who on earth dreamed this up? Wasn’t the 2005 reunion successful enough?About eighty ex-students of NHS met in August 2012 to discuss the merits of a Diamond Jubilee Celebration. Some of your colleagues, with fairly flat-spirited resignation, pronounced that, well, ‘enough was enough’ but others, possibly younger and decidedly more enthusiastic, jumped in and declared that it was indeed necessary to give the 60th anniversary a shot and what was required was a party.

Minutes were taken at this meeting but half way through, as enthusiasm intensified, they deteriorate and the record becomes only a hazy sketch of what actually took place. On reading them, large gaps appear as what had been a discussion becomes a shemozzle. Then, in a moment of great clarity, someone (the identity is not recorded in the minutes) recalled Dylan Thomas "Do not go! gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave"!

A unanimous decision was made there would be a reunion celebrating the 60th Anniversary of the Foundation of Nunawading High School at which we would get together again and rage, rage at the dying of the light!

Some little time after that meeting half a dozen of us knuckled down to the tasks that come ahead of a good show. This is what we decided:

Who? Any ex-student of NHS

What? By now you already know most of the answer but not that the format is a sit-down dinner. Drinks can be bought from the bar.

Why? Dylan Thomas (see above).

When? Saturday, 21 March, 2015 from 6pm to midnight.

Where? ‘Fenix’, 680 Victoria Street, Richmond smart joint, fresh renovations, a balcony overlooking the Yarra.

Cost? $95 up-front. Well up-front in fact by Friday, 6 February Registration after that date will be $105. We strongly urge early registration as seating is limited.

How? Now that you’ve decided to be part of the action click on the link www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=107713&bof=1
and follow the prompts to register.

Parking? Good parking on site or there are trams to the door up to you.

What? (Another what!) Forgot to mention earlier that, unlike 2005, there will be no speeches, unless something positively humorous needs to be said.

Why? Not satisfied with the previous explanation? OK, try this

Where else could you go and be genuinely loved and fêted for just showing up? An occasion where no one around you will give a fig about: fortunes or poverty of your wardrobe, griefs or joys about your weight, sickness or health of your pets, fame or notoriety on radio talkback or even your lack of interest in their grandkids.

Think about that!! If you have any queries write to any one of us:

Blackburn Lake Primary School is arranging an open afternoon and a ‘Back to 1964’ Ball for former students and families of BLPS (both events are on 5 December).  We are keen to contact former students to let them know of the events and also we are looking for memorabilia for a display for our festivities.  Records were lost in a fire at the school in the mid 1990s – as well as the exact location of a time capsule somewhere in the school grounds!

Any past BLPS students who would like to find out more? Phone 0402 095 709

Attempts to find a person who is willing to maintain and improve this web site have so far failed. Anyone interested please contact Tony.

Numerous ideas were floated regarding the form that the 2015 event(s) may take. One common theme did however emerge - that there is a high level of energy and enthusiasm for recognisng the 60 year milestone.
